Type 1 Health Complications and Risks

If diabetes is not treated properly or well controlled, it can cause damage to the tissues of the body and potentially cause a number of serious or life-threatening problems. Persistent high blood sugar can damage the eyes (diabetic retinopathy), kidneys (diabetic nephropathy), nerves (diabetic neuropathy), atherosclerosis (hardening) of the large arteries that can cause heart attack and stroke. People who keep their blood sugar levels within a safe range as defined between you and your healthcare provider can prevent—or at least significantly delay—these complications.
