About Disetronic

Corporate History

In the beginning there was just the vision...
To develop innovative infusion systems that allow simpler, more precise and reliable delivery of insulin than conventional devices and procedures.

In the early 80's, two brothers – one, an executive in the pharmaceutical industry and an expert in diabetes treatment, and the other contributing his extensive theoretical and practical knowledge in physics and engineering – recognized that the treatment of diabetes could be substantially improved and the quality of life of patients significantly enhanced with sophisticated programmable insulin pumps. Ever ambitious, they decided to develop the world’s smallest and best insulin pump.

With financing for their project from a government agency, the two young entrepreneurs started their company in 1984 in Burgdorf, Switzerland. The name of the company is Disetronic Medical Systems AG, and with only three employees, they started development of the first insulin pump called MRS.

In 1991, Disetronic set up a sales subsidiary in the USA – Disetronic USA, (DUSA) - located in St. Paul, Minnesota and launched the H-TRON V100, the second generation insulin pump. In 1996, Disetronic launched the third generation insulin pump: the H-TRONplus. In 2000, Disetronic launched the D-TRON insulin pump in the US market. In 2001, Disetronic introduced the high-end Ultraflex infusion set to the US market with great success, rounding out the popular Disetronic line of infusion sets which also include Rapid-D, Tender and Tender "mini". In 2002, with the launch of the D-TRONplus insulin pump, the insulin pump achieves the company vision of offering the world’s most advanced system for insulin administration.

In May 2003 The Roche Group of Basel Switzerland, acquired Disetronic and integrated the business into its Diabetes Care unit. In April of 2004, Disetronic-USA relocated from their St. Paul, Minnesota headquarters to Fishers, Indiana, a short distance from Roche Diagnostics North American headquarters located in the greater Indianapolis, Indiana area.

Disetronic Medical Systems is now a member of the Roche Group, a leader in diabetes care and the maker of the family of ACCU-CHEK® products and services. ACCU-CHEK is a trademark of Roche.
