A Palm^® PDA device or optional smartphone is part of the ACCU-CHEK^™ Spirit insulin pump system, helping you control your diabetes -- as well as your life -- with the integrated ACCU-CHEK^® Pocket Compass software with bolus calculator -- the all-in-one diabetes management tool. ACCU-CHEK Pocket Compass software computes your bolus requirements based on your blood glucose level, your food intake, insulin on board and personal parameters you determine with your healthcare team. Then you can discreetly program a bolus dose using your ACCU-CHEK Spirit insulin pump’s tactile buttons.

We have designed the bolus calculator to run on a select Palm PDA or optional smartphone for several reasons:

• Many people prefer to wear their pump discretely under their clothing and to bolus by touch through their clothing. Putting the bolus calculator on the pump makes it necessary to take the pump out of its discreet location to utilize the bolus calculator.
• Software upgrades for the bolus calculator are not intended to require sending the pump back to the manufacturer for installation.
• The PDA allows you to upload the food database of your choice to help with carbohydrate counting.
• Almost all of our customers use a cell phone and more than 20% currently use a PDA.*
• About 74% of customers surveyed expressed interest in the added capabilities that a PDA provides for managing their diabetes pump therapy.*
